Build the Fence

The Torah teaches us to recognize potential danger and address it before a problem occurs, even when the risk seems small. In Tai Chi, Ting Jin develops the sensitivity to recognize subtle changes before an attack fully develops, allowing us to respond before a problem becomes a crisis.

The teaching

How does a fence on the roof connect with Tai Chi? In this week's Torah portion, God commands us to build a fence around a roof so that no one will fall.

The lesson is to recognize potential danger and address it before the problem occurs. Even when the risk seems small, awareness allows us to prepare.

In Tai Chi, we use 'Ting Jin' - listening energy- to sense subtle changes in an opponent's balance and direction, often before anything develops. Exercises such as push hands train this sensitivity.

It's not to predict the future, but to recognize what is beginning to happen. Whether on a roof or in motion, awareness allows us to act before a problem becomes a crisis. Learn more at TorahTaiChi.com.
